ARTIST'S STATEMENT
The Inspiration
The Okanagan's natural landscape and the variety of lakes, creeks, forests, mountains and skies is what I love to paint. There is so much diversity and beauty in our own back yard. I endeavour to capture the moods, the colour, the designs and the light that so intrigue me in the places I discover.
Painting Process
Oil is my choice of mediums at present but I also enjoy painting in acrylic and watercolour depending on the impression I want to convey. I always start my paintings with a plan in mind but that plan can go out the window when I let my emotion or the act of painting take over. The pallet I work with is limited in colours and I mix a lot of my colours as well as all of my greens and blacks. I like to wash my canvas in a warm brown or an appropriate background colour before I begin to paint. Then I block in the shapes with my brush. My favourite part is to paint in the sky and the sky holes last!
Background
I grew up in Kamloops and spent most of my time there raising a family with my husband Barrie and immersing myself in music and solo work. I taught voice lessons, sang in choirs, had lead roles in Gilbert and Sullivan Operettas, and entered many festivals. Unfortunately after years of singing, I developed nodules on my vocal chords, which ended my career in music. About 11 years ago, after I retired from school teaching, I set up a studio and delved into painting more seriously.
Now, painting is the pastime I enjoy the most. I am a self taught artist. As I am finishing one painting I can hardly wait to start the next! |
Associations, Awards & Teaching
I belong to the Federation of Canadian Artists as well as The Okanagan Artists of Canada Society. My work has been accepted into many juried shows, won awards and has been shown and collected in different cities in BC, Alberta and Ontario. I also teach watercolour and acrylic to children and adults, and enjoy working on commissions.
